Alternative Break Leadership Board

Meet the 2017-18 Leadership Board.

Alternative Break Leadership Board members are a group of active citizens who are responsible for organizing Alternative Break programing and events.

Katie Joiner, Program Coordinator

Katie is a senior Urban Studies major with a concentration in City Planning and Administration. She currently serves as Program Coordinator. Katie has been an Alternative Breaker since her freshman year, when she traveled to Maryville, TN to learn about indigenous rights and volunteer with the Snowbird Cherokee. After that trip, she was hooked and has been an avid supporter of the Alternative Break movement. Katie thinks that every student should go on at least one Alternative Break trip during undergrad - they're unforgettable, horizon-expanding, and justice-driven experiences!

Outside of AB, Katie is a Research Assistant at the Riley Center and President of the Urban Studies Club. In her free time, she advocates for affordable housing, reads voraciously, and spends time with her friends.

Louisa Brunson, Site Leader Coordinator

Louisa Brunson is a junior at CofC majoring in communications and minoring in political science. She first got involved with Alternative Breaks first semester of her freshmen year through a super transformative fall break trip that focused on migrant workers’ rights and food insecurity. That trip undoubtedly forever-altered her college path, and she is oh-so grateful to have been a participant on that trip! Alternative Breaks have inspired, fostered, and shaped some of the passions that have fueled her through college thus far; it’s safe to say she would not be the ever-evolving person that she is without AB! As for other, non-AB related aspects of her identity: she loves all forms of potatoes and high top sneakers, and you can probably catch her listening to podcasts or blink182. She thinks scary movies are overrated and that documentaries are cool. She is an avid dancer that has no rhythm and caffeine addict with a deep appreciation for naps!

Shay Gregory, Marketing Coordinator

Shay is a Political Science and Philosophy double major graduating in Spring 2018. He currently serves as Marketing Coordinator and has been a member of the Alternative Break program for 3 years, with 3 trip experiences and two years spent on the Leadership Board. He has also led a trip to Washburn, TN. While Shay does not believe any AB trip can be better than any other, he did find his place when going on his first trip in January of 2016. Travelling to Atlanta, GA to experience the history of the Civil Rights Movement during Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend confirmed for Shay his interest in the Alternative Break movement. Now, he wants to share that with other students while at CofC and pursue a position to support AB programs out of graduation.

Outside of the Alternative Break Leadership Board, Shay has spent time as a Charleston Forty Tour Guide, the same organization's Diversity and Campus Inclusion Chair, and the Center for Civic Engagement's Engagement Fellow. His out of class time is spent with his cat Latte and bouldering at the local climbing gym. Find him advocating for the preservation of national parks and equitable social positions as well.

Jordan Esposa, Outreach and Recruitement Coordinator

Jordan Esopa is a political science major here at The College. She became involved with AB her freshmen year through a trip to Puerto Rico focused on sustainable living and food production. This year as our Recruitment and Outreach Coordinator, Jordan enjoys sharing about the AB experience. Her studies in political science combined with the experiential learning of AB, has taught Jordan the importance of active citizenship in a community.
