Day of Service
The Center for Civic Engagement and the Sustainability Literacy Institute cordially invite the College of Charleston community to participate in the Second Annual Day of Service on Saturday, February 23rd 2019.
This year, our Day of Service education and service will be focusing on the “CofC Sustains/Solves” theme of the year: social justice and fair distribution. Overall, justice is understood as impartial fairness and equality among people, regardless of their social location. Fair distribution builds on the concepts of distributive (the allocation of limited resources) and restorative (accounting for structural inequalities based on colonial expansion, racism, sexism, homophobia, and other intersectional forms of oppression) forms of justice. At the end of this experience, students should walk away with more knowledge on issues related to social justice and fair distribution as well as the information on more ways to engage with these issues in the Charleston community.
The day will begin with orientation and education followed by the service projects in the afternoon. Lunch will be provided. This year’s project sites include Habitat for Humanity, Keep Charleston Beautiful, the Green Heart Project, Fisher House Foundation and Charleston Area Senior Center & Meals on Wheels of Charleston.
