Point in Time Count

The Point In Time (PIT) Count is an annual count of sheltered and unsheltered homeless persons on a single night in January. South Carolina’s 2016 PIT Count estimated 5,050 persons were experiencing homelessness on a given night in January; 550 of those individuals were from the Lowcountry. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires organizations such as the Lowcountry Homeless Coalition to conduct these counts locally. Each year, the Lowcountry Homeless Coalition coordinates volunteers to conduct surveys in order to gather data on who and how many people are experiencing homelessness in the Lowcountry.
